sTyn Dwr Hall, Llangollen is my favourite wedding venue (and I have been to many, many hundreds of them as a magician) though I may be slightly biased, as it was our wedding venue too. A lot has changed since 2006 when we hired Tyn Dwr Hall, then a YHA property. I re-visited recently when I was hired as a wedding magician. What a beautiful venue still. In fact it is a lot nicer having had a complete renovation to make it in to a luxury wedding venue, with new accommodation – and glamping – they even have a druid!? Here is what it looks like now in the new extension, where I entertained with table magic during the wedding breakfast.
Now that’s a wedding cake! Sally and Jordan had an amazing wedding cake made of cheese…
Our wedding at Tyn Dwr Hall
I had entertained at a wedding at Tyn Dwr Hall in around 2005. The venue stayed in my mind as simply idyllic. Hence, when my fiancée and I decided to look at wedding venues I took her to see Tyn Dwr Hall and it was an immediate yes (I know of people visiting dozens of venues before deciding so this was pretty lucky).
As a YHA property it wasn’t in the best state of repair compared to some wedding venues but it ticked the boxes for a venue we were looking for. We wanted to have somewhere exclusively for our own use. Ideally somewhere slightly secluded and scenic. We also wanted to make our wedding a full weekend – as we had guests travelling from all over the UK, and Canada and Australia – and in our experience wedding days always seem to go too fast. It meant we could have a party on the Friday night, do activities in the morning on the Saturday (there were options to do climbing, archery, bike rides round the garden trail etc.), get married in Llangollen (Tyn Dwr Hall was not a licensed venue then), and have a party on the Saturday night. Perfect.
So we hired Tyn Dwr Hall for about £3,500 (honest – I told you a lot had changed) for the weekend – Friday to Sunday. It meant we could accommodate everyone, feed them, and keep them entertained. We put a marque for 120 guests on the lawn where the extended ballroom is now. We had a room plan for the 22 rooms, including and a boys and girl’s dorm. The largest dorm slept 20 – it’s now a fabulous spacious suite with a free standing bath and lovely views from the windows. Our posher friends and some of the older relies booked hotels and accommodation in Llangollen too.
Our Wedding Itinerary
We had our ceremony in the village…. which reminds me of an anecdote – I had 2 best men. Not 1, 2. They forgot the rings. We had to borrow 2 rings from our friends in the church. One from a friend who had got married the weekend before. So her ring was on 2 brides within 7 days.
A lot of PHOTOs to add of these…

Here are a few of the ideas we suggested to our guests that were able to stay longer in the area and explore a little. I hope they are of help if you are booking Tyn Dwr Hall for your wedding and looking for extra ideas for your guests nearby.
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – a world heritage site. www.pontcysyllte-aqueduct.co.uk Station Rd, Trevor Basin, Wrexham LL20 7TG
This is a huge and very high arched stone and cast iron structure that took ten years to design and build. It was completed in 1805. An amazing bit of engineering. . You can walk across it or travel across by boat. Not for the feint hearted, it is nonetheless a must.
Re-visiting Tyn Dwr Hall for our 10th Anniversary
We also visited Tyn Dwr Hall for our 10 year anniversary in 2016. The builder in charge of the renovation very kindly shown around. Wow! A lot had changed. The new extension could hold around 150 for a wedding breakfast. The canteen was now an immaculate room for a band / DJ. The dorms were now huge bedrooms with stand alone baths. The gardens that had rope swings and tree walks were being landscaped to highlight the stream, adding a waterfall, and making space for a yurt too. But the heart of the building remains, with the amazing carved wooden fireplaces and stained glass windows.
If we were to get married again we’d choose Tyn Dwr Hall. A beautiful, secluded, exclusive-hire, high-end, venue with history and accommodation. Llangollen is near by and its location in North Wales is ideal for a lot more adventures too. Hence my highest recommendation and when you are there ask how much the wallpaper cost psqm.
And if you are looking for a wedding day magician I would love to come along and entertain at your wedding too!
